Markinch Church - (12th Century)

A digital (3D) reconstruction showing Markinch Parish Church under construction. The MacDuff Earls of Fife built it in the early twelfth century to replace an earlier church dedicated to St Drostan. Fragments of Anglo-Saxon masonry from the oldest church at Markinch are still visible within the walls of the church that replaced it. Almost 900 masons’ marks have been recorded, and traces of a wheel winch that would have carried the stone blocks up the tower. The body of the church was rebuilt in 1768-88, but the 12th-century tower remains - its stone octagonal spire was added in 1807.
