Ruthven Barracks - (1734)

A digital reconstruction of Ruthven Barracks near Kingussie in the Scottish Highlands as it might have looked in 1734 after the stables were added. This aerial view shows the two barracks blocks with the stables behind on the northwest side. The barracks were designed to house 120 troops, and the stables housed 28 horses for dragoons.

How this image was made

Software and tools used: Blender 3D, Cycles Render Engine, Photoshop

Notes: This reconstruction image was developed from a digital 3D model based on Andrew Jelfe's 1719 architectural plan drawings, which served as the principal reference. Copies of the drawings and manuscript maps are available to view at the National Library of Scotland (MS.1648 Z.03/20a, and also MS.1648 Z.03/19a). Additional information was drawn from several sources, including photographs, and with input and feedback from Eve Boyle of Historic Environment Scotland, Geoffrey Stell, and castle historian Simon Forder.
